Free-roaming dogs will be rounded up — SRDC

April 19, 2018, Thursday

SIBU: Pet dogs including those with vaccination tags will be rounded up if they are found roaming freely outside the house compounds.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau, who is assisting the Sibu Rabies Control Working Committee, said free roaming dogs, with or without vaccination tags, risked being rounded up by council staff.

“As such, the owners are advised to keep their pets inside their house compounds.”

For the record, one of the two-pronged strategies implemented here to keep rabies at bay is a mass anti-rabies vaccination exercise to vaccinate 70 per cent of the dogs across this division.

This creates a rabies immune belt in the division to curb the spread of the deadly virus into the division and upwards to Bintulu and Miri.

The other strategy is the removal of strays. The war against the deadly disease started here on Jan 20.

Meanwhile, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai observed that pet owners in Sibu Jaya had the tendency to let their dogs roam freely in public places sometimes.

“That is why you can see dogs with vaccination tags still running around,” he said.
